Why coils? What are coils used for?

Coils are typically the most economical way to produce long-lengths of material; often, the end-users are stamping houses that will use the slit coil (ie, the long-length of material) to achieve the best material yield when stamping components out. For example, if a stamped part has a 6” wide flat pattern, they’ll likely order slit coils at 6.5” wide to minimize the overall scrap. In other markets, such as roofing or siding, the coils will be used to shear specific lengths and then be formed (often by way of a panel bender) into gutters, trim, siding, etc.

What are the traditional ways to store steel or aluminum coils?

Accepted Answer

Traditionally, before LEAN began offering a new solution, coil stock was most commonly stacked directly on the floor, coil-on-top-of-coil. With wooden pallets acting as the spacers, coils were stacked in rows, with the older material getting buried further and further back. This resulted in a lot of extra movement and handling, especially in the event that the operator needed to retrieve a specific coil to run their next job.

Why do manufacturers use LEAN Coil Storage Racks?

If manufacturers need to create more floor space, or if they want to reduce handling time, high density coil storage systems are an extremely fast ROI. Even further, they greatly improve the safety on the shop floor, and the cleanliness/appearance. Once a stamping company or roofing company makes the switch, they don’t look back!

How are the coils stored in LEAN coil cartridges?

Metal Coils can either stand upright, with the coil’s eye accessible, or lie flat on the cartridge. Different attachments for the cartridges are available, and each are designed to best-fit your specific operations. Many times we see slit coils lay flat, while trim coils are stored on their side.

What is the weight capacity for each coil cartridge?

We specifically design each coil cartridge to your shop’s standards. Many roofing companies bring in coils at less than 3,000 pounds per coil, which allows us to use some different, more economical material gauges than the heavy stampers where we need to design for either 5,000 pound or 7,500 pound coils. We design with both your capacities and budgets in mind.

Are the coil racks modular?

Yes, the racking is built in modular sections so that you can either add or remove sections as needed. Many times, companies will start with a short system, and then add a second or third tier at a later date, as they grow into new volumes.

What finish is put on the storage racks for coils?

Accepted Answer

All racking is powder-coated as standard. If you’d like custom colors to best-match your company or equipment colors, please let us know.

Are the coil racks anchored to the floor?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there are anchoring locations provided with each system. Depending on size and capacity, the exact anchoring location may vary, but we’ll be sure to send full assembly & anchoring guidelines at time of shipment.

Most commonly, these are built-to-order to make sure we have the best-fit solution for your specific needs. However, we do have standard offerings as well, and can typically offer those on shorter lead times. Just ask, and we’ll present all options.
