"Reducing Waste" is the theme that resonates throughout the principles of Lean Manufacturing. Shown here is a small prototype that we used to develop our patent pending steel cartridge to be shuttled back and forth between the steel supplier and fabricator.
Here is a full-size cartridge designed to accommodate 5'x10' sheets of raw stock. The perimeter pins (removable and reversible) have the their "tips" buried inside the bushings in this picture, allowing a lower profile to increase storage density in rack.
We work with steel suppliers to load our patent pending steel cartridges directly on their line. Shown here are two cartridges, stacked and loaded with 4'x8' stainless steel sheets, directly off the level and shear line.
Since "returnables" are an extremely new concept to the metal fabrication industry, we are here to help! We work with the service centers to create a solution that works efficiently for their production line. Depending on the level and shear line they are using, there are a few differnet options we can suggest they use to maintain production rate.
When you have this many heads gathered, you know it's a big deal! The steel industry is finally catching up to other industries in terms of shipping returnables, and we are very excited to be at the forefront of the development. Who knew stacks of steel could captivate so much attention!?
Here is a better view of the material, ready to leave the service center and be delivered to the fab house. Notice that all the corners are protected, banding is secure, and material protected -- all without any wood!
A small batch of our returnable cartridges are freshly powdercoated and ready to head to the customer.
Once cartridges arrive at the fab house, they are loaded directly into a storage/staging rack. Each level is independently accessible and storage density is more than 2x greater than cantilever racking!

Note the tips on the pins - these are used when cartridges are stacked directly on top of each other, allowing wood to be completely eliminated for both the service center and the fab shop. Ask us how this works!
Note the pins have been flipped upside down so the tip is concealed within the bushing. This allows for more compact shelf spacing in the rack (every little bit matters!). Ask us for more information on these pins.
The racking structure is also powdercoated and shipped in flat panels for easy freight and modular assembly.
A service center delivers raw sheet stock directly on our cartridges, without any supplementary dunnage (wood), and material is immediately ready to be loaded directly into our rack system or an automation system. This reduces handling time and eliminates wooden pallets.
Pin tables are used to transfer material from wooden pallets onto our steel cartridge. Note that all the pins slide independently along the steel tubing and also have acrylic caps so the material is not scratched during the transfer process.
When the pin table is not in-use, the pins can conveniently change orientation for low-profile storage. It's all about using your space efficiently!
WIP Staging Rack
Our WIP Staging Rack is a great place to strategically stage parts/jobs between operations. Using a cartridge system, each shelf is independently accessible and can be clearly labeled for visual management. This system uses durable, strong steel cartridges to replace wooden 40x48 pallets for internal operations.

We like to call them "Culture Carts" -- smooth rolling and efficient, these carts are extremely convenient and durable. Flat top surface allows for a variety of projects, and the culture statement is customizable per your company's values and culture. Sizes are also customizable per your application.

This batch of carts required a slight lip on the edges to prevent containers from slipping off. This specification was a request from our customer.
4 Stacking Pallet Racks are being used as a modular "staging area" for the Timesavers (deburring) machine seen in the back right of the picture. The operator always knows which jobs are coming next and where he can find them - one major key to efficiency!
5 Stacking Pallet Racks are conveniently located next to this CNC machining center to help the operator make the most of his vertical space after jobs are complete. Instead of having wooden pallets scattered around the floor, the operator stages the parts in a clearly defined area that uses vertical space effectively.
One customer ships a lot of flat blanks (making for a LOT of wooden shipping pallets). To prevent these wooden pallets from overtaking their shipping department, they use our stacking pallet racks to minimize the space each pallet takes. Each pallet is indepently accessible, and towers can be reconfigured based on the current workload. Note the tight vertical spacing achieved.

This "mini-hopper" is great for getting in tight places. After loaded up with a few hundred pounds of chips, slugs, etc., it can be picked up with forklift or BigJoe and conveniently dumped like any other hopper. Designed to push by hand, it is extremely handy and can save operators a lot of time and back aches. Sizes are customizable to your application.
